October 3, 2007- Washington, D.C. – Afghan style was “in vogue” at D.C. Fashion Week’s International Ethical Fashion Show.  Held at the gorgeous Galleria at Lafayette Center in the heart of Washington, D.C., the once-a-year event attracted over 200 guests from the media, retail, design, fashion, diplomatic and development communities.

The event began with a trunk show reception where guests mingled and shopped from ethical retailers such as Artizan Sarai.  By working with producers who support fair labor and practices that do not harm the environment, Artizan Sarai supports Fair Trade production practices.  Excitement and buzz surrounded its attractively merchandised table and selection of unique lapis and silver bangles, turquoise pendants, elegant scarves and hand embroidered clutches.

Co-founder and President Alina Atash stated, “We carry products from Afghanistan, India, Turkey, and Morocco, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that shoppers purchased most of our Afghanistan collection of jewelry and accessories.  It was the first time Afghan products were included in D.C. Fashion Week and buyers loved it.”

Following the reception, four international fashion designers showcased their collections, including Afghan-American designer SAMIRA ATASH.  The runway show included her signature “One” collection and new designs inspired by Afghanistan, including contemporary tops and skirts made out of the infamous “burqa” fabric.

The designer also unveiled a new line of stylish t-shirts for women and men called
“UNI-TEE”, which mixes the label’s signature look with messages of cultural understanding.  One design – a white t-shirt with Rumi poetry written in Farsi calligraphy – caught the eye of many buyers.

“As always, my designs are inspired by Afghanistan, the Silk Road, and uniting East and West through fashion.  It is wonderful to see so many people, from all races and religions, reacting positively to them,” said fashion designer Samira Atash.  The label is also made under Fair Trade principles.

Sponsored by event and marketing firm Avani Ribbon, D.C. Fashion Week’s International Ethical Fashion Show raised awareness for creative “fashion for development” initiatives.  The collaboration showed that being fashionable and socially responsible can go hand in hand.
